Dear Counsellor,

After high school I was offered a good job at a certain company, and I really enjoy the job. However, since I am supposed to start university, I’m wondering whether I should take a business course or follow my passion which is journalism. Will choosing passion alone make sense if I stay on my job. Please advise me.

Yours, Christella

There is an effective alignment between one’s career dream and life success. When you are considering which course to take at the university, remember this decision will have long-term consequences on your life, your passion and your happiness. The current employment should not sabotage your career plans. You will need time to think carefully about your interests and skills and possible directions that will bring balance between your career goals and life victory. This is your life, your journey and your happiness, so own it and make it clear that you won’t sway from your dream.

Journalism will open up networking opportunities, make you familiar with trends, boost your confidence and will equip you with more meaningful knowledge plus significant life skill that will enrich your future employment opportunities. There is no guarantee that your current job must translate into your earlier career goal. More importantly, focusing on the career of your interest will encourage you to complete the course more easily and successfully because your interest perfectly matches your internal abilities.

It’s intellectually stimulating and opens out many fascinating opportunities for you to explore unique academic, social and economical heights in life. Net working opportunities get much closer as you connect with like-minded people who are all equally ambitious and passionate about journalism.

If you have the passion and the motivation to stay ahead of the game, then a creative career course can be an exciting and rewarding experience. You don’t need to be a business expert before taking an offer in business-related brand but all that matters is that; working can help you explore career directions and ultimately train you about commitment, time management, responsibility and handling money. Gaining such important introductory experience in the business will attach emphasis to your initial qualifications and advance your competence in working efficiently with people under pressure which will even draw you closer to your future potential career.

All you need to do is to avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead as possible by being organised and doing everything just ahead of time. If you follow your passion, you’ll have more than enough to show your capabilities in different areas and you will be preparing for yourself a bright future.
