Rwanda's University of Kibungo clinched their first victory against Espoir VI of DR Congo 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) in Pool C of Men's African Club Championship held at Taraji Hall in Tunis, Tunisia on Sunday.
The win is the first for the Rwandan team in three matches after two defeats against Assarya of Libya and Borj Bouaririj of Algeria. The talent hitter Yves Mutabazi led his team for the victory and topped the scorers list with 17 points including 2 aces.
Although Espoir VI played their best in the third set to catch the match, the Rwandans won the crucial points to win the match in straight sets. UNIK faces Burundian champions Douanes today in their final group match, at 5pm.
In the opening match on Friday, Assarya of Libya fought for 150 minutes to clinch a thrilling victory over University of Rwanda in a tight tiebreaker 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 26-28, 25-14, and 17-15).
On Saturday, Bourj Bouaririj of Algeria came from a set behind to beat the Rwandan champions 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-8).
Tunisia's Etoile du Sahel and Algeria's Bourj Bouaririj booked their tickets to the quarter-finals following their straight victories over Espoir VI and Assarya on Day 3. There will be 6 other slots in the quarters to be confirmed in Day 4 and 5 of the preliminary round.
Etoile du Sahel hammered Espoir 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, and 25-15) to mark 2-0 in win- loss ratio before their last match on Tuesday against AS Police of Benin.
Bourj Bouaririj worked hard to beat Assarya 3-0 (25-22, 25-29, 25-22) to improve their record to 3-0 and 9 points to confirm a quarter-final ticket form Pool C ahead of their last match against Police of Botswana.
