Prosecution has confirmed having in custody Alexandre Mvuyekure the former Mayor of Gicumbi District and other top district officials, former and current.

The crimes they stand accused border on giving undue advantage to some of the bidders in the execution of a tender within the district.

According to Prosecution Spokesman, Faustin Nkusi, apart from Mvuyekure, the others in custody include the Chairperson of the District Council, Jean-Baptiste Bizimana and Fidèle Byiringiro, who was until late last year, the executive secretary of the district.

The other suspects in custody are Dieudonné Mutabaruka, the director of finance at the district and Faustin Nsengimana, an entrepreneur.

Nkusi said that they were arrested on Tuesday and are being held at Byumba Police Station.

They are being investigated by the financial crimes unit of prosecution, he said, but could not elaborate specifics of the crimes they stand accused.

In July last year, Mvuyekure and Phocas Mutunzi, who works in the office in charge of good governance, were accused of embezzling money while working as executive secretaries of Rubaya Sector in the same district, and they have been on bail since.

Mvuyekure was the executive of Rubaya Sector in 2010 before he was promoted to the district level and was replaced by Mutunzi.

In November last year, Byiringiro tendered in his resignation as district executive secretary, citing personal reasons.
