Volleyball league debutants Gisagara claimed outright top spot after wins over University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies, and defending champions University of Kibungo on Saturday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium in Kigali.

Gisagara eased past University of Kibungo (UNIK) 3-0 (25-15, 25-22 and 25-17) before defeating UTB 3-0 (25-16, 25-20 and 26-24).

Eric Gakwaya’s team have 28 points after 12 matches — four points clear of second-placed IPRC-South, who beat former champions APR 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 21-19).

"The league is very complicated and we need to give our best in every match. Getting the six points today greatly boosts our chances to stay in the race for the title, but we have to keep in mind that it’s still too early,” said Gisagara captain Flavien Ndamukunda.

Meanwhile, UNIK lost 2-3 against UTB (28-26, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 and 9-15). Top volleyball teams in the country are battling for top four finish to qualify for the playoff which will determine the league champions.
