RWANDA Taekwondo Federation has revealed the prize money for gold medalists in the upcoming International Gorilla Open and African ParaTaekwondo Championship set for March 31 to April 2 at Amahoro indoor stadium.
In a category that has over eight competitors, the gold medalist will pocket US$1000, while the champion in a category with less than 8 contenders, will bag US$500.
Only gold medalists in senior categories will be awarded in monetary terms. Winners in junior categories, same as silver and bronze medalists in senior categories will be only awarded medals.
This was revealed by the local taekwondo governing body secretary general, Placide Bagabo.
Asked why some winners will be awarded US$1000, others US$500 while others just medals, the former national team captain replied,” It is easier for a person to win a competition of 8 people or less than it is to win one of 20 people. The later faces a stiffer competition.”
The two international competitions are expected to attract around 600 taekwondo martial artists from over 30 countries. Rwanda will field a total 66 representatives, 36 in Gorilla Open and 30 in African ParaTaekwondo Championship.
