RWANDA’S Epiphanie Nyirabarame scooped Frw150.000 in the just concluded Kampala International marathon staged over the weekend.
Nyirabarame, who participated in the women half marathon race, clocked one hour and 18 minutes to finish fourth in a race won by Tanzania’s Sarah Ramadhan who clocked 1:14:35.
Ugandans Cathy Webombesa and Sarah Kiplagat finished second and third in 1:19:05 and 1:22:06 respectively.
The Rwandan Olympian, who was making her first appearance in the prestigious Kampala marathon performed better compared to her male compatriot Slyvain Rukundo who finished outside the money winning bracket.
Rukundo, who is the leading half marathon runner in the country with the exception of Dieudonne Disi, clocked one hour, four minutes and 38 seconds to finish in sixth position.
Isaac Kiprop made up for his loss to Martin Toroitich last year, winning the men’s half marathon (21km) in front of Prisons impressive runner Jackson Kiprop (1:04:04).
The 25-year-old runner, Francis Musani, surprisingly won the 42.95km men’s race in 2:19.46 as Ugandans dominated the 5th MTN Kampala International Marathon.
Musani became the first Ugandan to win the full marathon since it was elevated to international standards in 2005.
Kenyans had dominated the race since 2005. He was with the lead pack for the bigger part but broke away with only two kilometers left to hold off countrymen Domenic Kimutai (2:19:47) and David Keteria (2:19:59).
The 2004 champion, Joseph Nsubuga, crossed the line in ninth position (2:22:39) behind last year’s winner Tuwei Kiprop (Kenya), who clocked 2:2:18.
Uganda also recorded a one-two finish in the women’s marathon with Jane Suuto winning her second title in a period of three years.
Suuto clocked 2:48:42 ahead of the Irene Chemisto (2:19:47).
