RUSIZI — The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Local Government, Eugene Barikana has warned Rusizi district leaders against corruption.

Barikana made the remarks last week while addressing area Sector Executive Secretaries and district officials at the district conference hall in Kamembe.

"I seriously advise you as leaders in this district not to be involved in corrupt acts and related malpractices because they hinder development in society. You should always encourage residents to fight against it (corruption) in order to weed it out completely,” Barikana said.

He also asked leaders to prepare their strategic plans indicating how they would provide shelter to the vulnerable genocide survivors, Rwandans who returned recently from Tanzania and people who were left behind by the country’s history.

Barikana asked leaders to encourage residents to settle in community settlements in order to consolidate land for agriculture.

On quality service, he urged leaders to always fight against injustice in the region and to deliver quality services to people they serve.

Barikana also called upon leaders to improve health and sanitation facilities in the district and to change people’s attitudes towards work by advising them to work hard.

Speaking to The New Times shortly after the meeting, the PS said that he visited the area in order to meet the new district leadership.
