NYAMASHEKE — Jean Damascene Bimenyimana, the head of the Cyangugu Catholic Diocese at the weekend commissioned the building of a new Catholic Church worth Rwf69 million in the Ruharambuga Sector, Nyamasheke district.

At the ceremony, Bimenyimana, who was flanked by the Nyamasheke vice Mayor in charge of economic affairs, Oscar Nzeyimana, said that the church was built there in order to extend  services nearer to the people, because the nearest church was located miles away, in the Kagano Sector.

Bimenyimana called upon Catholics to always remain faithful Christians who obey God’s commandments and to love one another.

He further encouraged them to promote Christianity, peace, unity and reconciliation in the region, by fighting against genocide ideology and divisionism.

"I call upon every Christian at this occasion to always be faithful, work as God’s ambassadors in promoting peace, unity and reconciliation among your fellow residents in the area,” he urged.

On his part, Nzeyimana hailed the Catholic Church for building the new facility in the area, saying it would strengthen Christianity.

Calling on residents to always participate in all government programmes, Nzeyimana asked the Catholic Church to build more churches, schools and hospitals in the region.

According to Bimenyimana, out of the Rwf69 m, Rwf52 m was raised by Catholics in Switzerland; Rwf9 m was donated from Rome and over Rwf4 m was contributed by Catholics in the Ruharambuga Sector.
