Defending champions APR women basketball club continued their perfect start to the 2016/17 season after defeating bitter rivals Ubumwe on Sunday at Amahoro indoor stadium.

APR, bidding for their second league title in a row, were seeking for a revenge against reigning playoffs champions Ubumwe, which recently defeated them in the final of 2017 National Heroes’ Day tournament to claim the first title in 2017.

The military-side led by their skipper Charlotte Umugwaneza and point guard Sandra Kantore, outperformed Ubumwe in all the four quarters before wrapping the game up with a comfortable 74-60 win.

APR won the first quarter 17-10 before claiming the second one 10-9 to go in the half time break leading 27-19.

In the third quarter, APR maintained their pace and took it on 22-20 before claiming even the last one 25-21.

"We had lost to them (Ubumwe) in the final of Heroes’ tournament and we could not afford to lose against them for the second time, we had studied their game before correcting all the mistakes we did and we entered the game very optimistic to win, said APR head coach Charles Mbazumutima

Centre player Umugwaneza dropped the game’s high 24 points to guide his team to victory.

Meanwhile, in another game, IPRC-South, led by Cecile Nzaramba, beat The Hoops Rwanda 74-47 with Nzaramba contributing a total of 24 points.

 After match day two, APR leads the table standings with four points followed by Ubumwe with three points joint with third placed IPRC-South while The Hoops Rwanda are fourth with two points with UR Huye at the bottom without any point so far.
