Alphonse Munyantwari, the president of the Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA), has candidly admitted that the standard of match officiating in Rwanda falls short of expectations.

In an interview with Times Sport, he acknowledged the need for stringent measures against referees who commit significant errors that negatively affect football matches.

Complaints have persisted within the Rwandan league regarding matches that did not unfold as anticipated due to poor officiating. Some teams have voiced their concerns directly to FERWAFA, and in response, some new measures have been put in place.

These include the appointment of former Rwandan international referee Louis Hakizimana as the leader of the referees' commission within the local football governing body.

Munyantwari reassured stakeholders that extensive efforts are being made to enhance the level of referees, as he emphasised that the process requires time and consistent training, both domestically and internationally.

He urged referees to aspire for professionalism, as he pledged to support them by facilitating the improvement of their skills. In addition, he expressed optimism about the potential improvement of young referees, noting that with proper guidance, they will evolve into competent officials.

In the first round of the league, some teams and coaches expressed dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions.

The association is actively trying to examine the concerns, some of which were raised by football fans on social media, Times Sport has learned.
