Rwanda’s female rider Jeanne d’ Arc Girubuntu’s attempt to defend her silver medal in the elite women Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the ongoing 2017 African Continental Championships in Luxor, Egypt has just ended rather unceremonious after she finished eighth in the 29kilomtre race.

21-year old Girubuntu, the only female rider on Team Rwanda at the annual event posted 42 minutes and 54 seconds to settle for a disappointing eighth place ending her hopes to become the first Rwandan female rider to claim a medal in the continental showpiece twice in a row.

Girubuntu reached the finish line three minutes and 14 seconds behind Mauritius gold winner Aurelie Lincoln Halbwachs who covered the 29-kilometer distance in 0’:42”:40’’’ to claim this year’s edition.

In the second place came Eritrea’s Debesay Mosana who posted forty-three minutes to win a silver medal while South Africa’s Juonita Venter claimed a bronze medal after finishing in the third-place clocking 43 minutes and seven seconds.

Last year in Casablanca, Morocco, Girubuntu claimed silver in this category, becoming the first Rwandan woman to win a medal at that level.

Girubuntu’s last chance to grab a silverware this year remains in the Elite Women Road Race slated for Saturdaythat will cover a distance of 99 kilometers.

On Tuesday, Team Rwanda won their first medal (Bronze) in the men’s Team Time Trial courtesy of Ndayisenga, Areruya, Samule Mugisha and Jean Bosco Nsengimana.
