Mountain Classic Athletics (MCA) fast-rising athlete James Sugira won this year’s national cross country championship that was held at Kicukiro grounds on Wednesday.
The 19-year old clocked 30 minutes, 38 seconds and 78 micro seconds to win the 10km national event that had attracted several athletes from different clubs in the country.
Felicien Muhitira who also runs for MCA finished second after posting 30 minutes, 53 seconds and 84 micro second while Primien Manirafasha from Kamonyi Athletics Club came in third place after using 31 minutes, six seconds and 13 micro seconds.
APR’s Alex Nizeyimana finished in fourth-place clocking 31 minutes, 24 seconds and 43 micro seconds while his team mate Eric Sebahire who was third in last year’s annual rankings for the best athlete of the year finished in the fifth place posting 31 minutes, 30 seconds and 75 micro seconds.
Meanwhile in the women category, National Athletics Stars’ (NAS) Clementine Mukandaga emerged the winner after using 36’:58” and was followed by a quartet of APR athletes that included Celine Iranzi 37’:24”:16”’, Claudette Mukasakindi 37’:50”:28”’, Marthe Yankurije 39’:04’’:91” and Vivine Niragire 41’:13”:81”’ in that order.
The one-day event was also meant to facilitate Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) in the final selection for the athletes that will represent the country at the forthcoming 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships slated for March 26 in Uganda.
According RAF Secretary General Johnson Rukundo the list for the selected athletes will be announced before the end of this week and they will immediately begin a residential training camp.
The one-day IAAF World Cross Country Championships will be hosted at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Ground in Kampala, Uganda.
