Week 16 of the 2023/24 Rwanda Primus National League witnessed several exciting matches, with the exception of the APR vs. Marines FC game which did not take place due to the army side's participation in the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.

A total of 16 goals were scored during the matches, with Gasogi United being the sole team to secure an away victory.

Here are five noteworthy observations from the action.

  1. Gasogi demonstrates the power of teamwork

Gasogi United's decision to part ways with high-profile players during the transfer window and promote eight youth players paid off in their 2-1 victory against Rayon. Serge Kabanda, a product of their youth team, scored two crucial goals. Gasogi also showcased that teamwork triumphs over individual star-power, as the team managed to walk away with victory over Rayon, a powerhouse that boasts big-name players like Heritier Luvumbu.

  1. Wade's job in jeopardy

Mohammed Wade's position as Rayon's coach is on the line following the team's disappointing performance against Gasogi which ended in a 2-1 defeat. Despite having the luxury of bringing in new players, Rayon's performance fell short. Wade might face termination of his contract after a rather not-so-good record of six wins, three defeats, and three draws in 12 games. Potential replacements that are reportedly discussed within the Rayon hierarchy include Cedric Kaze and Ivan Minnaert.

  1. Mashami's persistent slow start

Vincent Mashami has historically struggled with slow starts as a coach, evident this weekend in Nyagatare as his Police FC lost 2-1 to Sunrise FC in the second round opener. Despite a poor start in the current campaign, Mashami has shown the ability to improve results as the season progresses. However, his slow start could pose a threat to Police FC's title challenge in the critical stages of the league.

  1. AS Kigali's struggle to score goals

AS Kigali continues to grapple with goal-scoring issues, evident in their goalless draw with Bugesera FC. Once a key team in Rwandan football, AS Kigali is now battling relegation. With 14 games remaining, players like Erisa Keith Ssekisambu must step up to salvage their season.

  1. Sunrise FC and Mukura Victory Sports' sensational comebacks

Sunrise FC and Mukura Victory Sports showcased their prowess with impressive victories over Police FC and Amagaju, respectively. Mukura's comeback from a 2-0 deficit to beat Amagaju 3-2 in the Huye derby demonstrated mental resilience, especially considering Amagaju's 4-1 triumph in the first round. Sunrise FC also exhibited resilience by overcoming an early goal against Police FC, a team known for its balance, to win 2-1.
