RE: "MPs approve law making Kiswahili official language” (The New Times, February 9). I’m all for having a universally shared language among East Africans but isn’t that the very purpose of having a non-African language such as English?

I am in agreement with MP Juvenal Nkusi with respect to not burden the national budget with such an endeavour.

Your average Rwandan who needs to travel within the bloc will eventually master the language to fulfill their business needs but the government does not need to burden itself with this.

And the same goes for swahilophones of East Africa. And can someone please explain what the EAC passport has to do with implementing this policy?
