Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the School of Finance and Banking (SFB) students and staff on Friday joined nation-wide demonstrations against the arrest of Chief of State Protocol, Rose Kabuye.
The students walked from the main roundabout in Kigali town to the German Embassy singing songs praising Rose as a war hero not a terrorist.
SFB’s Vice Guild President, Erasmus Rwinkesha, explained that the school planned the demonstrations earlier but couldn’t carry them out because most students had gone home for holidays.
"Together with KIST students and staff, we came to fight this war against the French and Germans who are trying to slow the progress our country has already taken as far as unity and reconciliation are concerned,” Rwinkesha added.
"It is very sad that even the Germans are helping the French in this. Rose Kabuye is innocent and as a Rwandan saying goes, "God spends the day in other countries and sleeps in Rwanda”, she is going to win the case and she is coming home soon,” he continued.
Referring to the Kabuye arrest, a banner carried by a demonstrator read, "Justice delayed is Justice denied.”
At the Embassy, a student had this to say, "SFB strongly denounces the attempts by France to confuse its role in the 1994 Genocide. We appeal to the international community to intervene and free Rose Kabuye with immediate effect.”
Kabuye is now in France. She was released on bail and is awaiting her next hearing due to be announced soon.
