Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB) will today hold their general election to choose a new executive committee—the exercise will be held at Amahoro National Stadium.

Former Mayor of Gisagara district Leandre Karekezi will be challenging the incumbent Gustave Nkurunziza for the post of FRVB president.

Karekezi, a former APR and National University of Rwanda (NUR) player initiated Gisagara Volleyball Club as well as the construction of the country’s first internationally recognized volleyball gymnasium worth Rwf921 million that was completed in December last year.

Apart from the candidates vying for post of president, current first vice president, Julius Kansime is standing unopposed while for the second vice president position, incumbent Jean Pierre Ribanje from Ruhango will faceoff with Fernand Sauveur Ruterana from Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC).

On the General Secretary post, Adalbert Mfashimana is the only candidate with Providence Mukamurenzi from Rwanda Revenue Authority to tussle it out with current Jeannette Uwera for the post of treasurer.

Meanwhile, Indatwa and Inkesha School (formerly Groupe scolaire de Butare) are seeking to improve the level of the annual Father Emmanuel Kayumba memorial volleyball tournament.

According to the school head teacher, Father Celestin Rwirangira, this year’s edition, which will be played on February 18-19 in Huye, is expected attract all league teams in both men and women categories.

"We are working hard to improve the levels of the tournament in terms of quality of competition and prize money, which is why we’re approaching different potential sponsors and teams to come on board,” said Rwirangira.

The tournament is organized in memory of the late Father Kayumba, who passed away in 2009. He was instrumental in the growth of volleyball in Groupe Scolaire de Butare, a school that has, over the years, produced some of Rwanda’s best players.
