Several worshipers were injured on Thursday night after they were attacked and assaulted by a mob of unidentified people in Huye District.

The worshippers were attending night prayers when, according to eyewitnesses, a group of about 30 people, armed with traditional arms attacked them, injuring several.   

The attack, which has been confirmed by the Mayor of Huye District, Eugene Kayiranga Muzuka, took place at around 9pm on Thursday.

The attack prompted an impromptu security meeting in which one of the worshippers present said that they were attacked with machetes and spears.

"In the church, we were 12 of us,” said the witness, only identified as Phillip.

Four worshippers were seriously injured have now been admitted at the Central University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB) in Huye district.

Other eyewitnesses said during the meeting that the attackers were shouting that they (worshipers) should stop misleading people saying that they perform miracles.

Muzuka warned that this attack was a wakeup call for people to take community policing seriously.

The Regional Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police Andre Hakizimana said that so far, nine people had been arrest in connection with the attack as investigations continue.

Those detained are currently being held at Ngoma Police Station in Huye.
