RUSIZI — The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Jean d’Arc Mujawamariya has urged residents of Rusizi district to be security conscious.

Speaking in Rusizi last week, the minister cited a recent incident in which a grenade blast injured a young girl in the Rwimbogo Sector and other cases in which unknown people on November 18 wrote warning letters to 32 residents, mainly genocide survivors, threatening to rob and kill them, as security threats in the district.

The minister advised area residents to collaborate with security authorities in order to further strengthen the security situation in the area.

"As you are all aware that there is some insecurity in this sector caused by unknown gunmen who threw a grenade here and others who have been writing warning letter. I urge you as responsible individuals to stand up and work with security organs to identify those who intend to destabilise security in this area,” she said.

Security, she added, requires local leaders and residents to participate in community policing and civic education.

She also asked residents to promote peace, unity, reconciliation, love and fight against genocide ideology.

On Aids, the minister urged residents to go for voluntary HIV/Aids counselling and testing in order for them to know their health status.

She also advised residents to adopt family planning so as to produce few children.

On poverty, Mujawamariya urged residents to be hard working and to avoid the habit of laziness in order for them to uplift their economic status.

At the meeting, the District Police Commander, Superintendent Danny Ndayambaje, encouraged residents to always report cases of insecurity to the concerned authorities in time.
