President Paul Kagame on January 12 commended Tanzania’s journey of peace and unity, on the occasion of celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

The event, held at Uwanja Wa Amaan Stadium, saw the presence of various leaders including Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania, and Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua of Kenya and Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca of Burundi.
In his remarks, Kagame congratulated the leaders and citizens of Zanzibar for maintaining the spirit of the Zanzibar Revolution and advancing the aspirations and goals of the founders of the Revolution.
"On this historic day, we remember the brave women and men who fought against injustice. This period also marked the beginning of a successful union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika, which formed the nation of Tanzania.”
He mentioned that this is proof that Africans are capable of coming together to solve their problems, harnessing opportunities that come with it.
"The accomplishments of Zanzibar and Tanzania as whole are a source of pride for our East Africa region and our continent. In Rwanda, we also refused to let our tragic past define who we are as people. Nothing is impossible when we work together."
Kagame also congratulated the leadership of Tanzania for maintaining peace in the country.
"By doing so, you have remained in the revolution and your success in unity is evidence that we can unite as brothers and as nations in Africa.”
Reports indicate that the Zanzibar Revolution’s 60th anniversary celebrations kicked off three weeks earlier with nationwide environment cleaning and projects being launched in various parts of the Island.
The Zanzibar Revolution, Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar in Swahili, occurred in January 1964 and led to the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his mainly Arab government by the island's majority Black African population.
