NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE — At least 50 elderly women in Musanze district have completed six-month training in basic literacy skills including reading and writing.

The course was organised by the Restoration Church-Musanze aimed at fighting illiteracy and ignorance. Awarding certificates to the participants on thursday, the Restoration Church Pastor, Jonas Matabaro observed that most people perish due to lack of knowledge.

He explained that adult literacy education equips people with the knowledge to serve as local authorities capable of making reports. It also teaches people to adopt the basic sanitation standards in their families, he added.

One of the beneficiaries, Melaine Ndererimana, 45, said that after learning how to read and write she was appointed as a community health advisor in her cell.

According to Pastor Matabaro, the Restoration Church with the support of Compassion International assists over 200 orphaned children in the Musanze including the payment of their school fees.
