KARONGI — Police in Bwishyura Sector Karongi district are holding a man in connection with the mysterious death of his wife.

Dismas Mpakaniye, 54, a resident of Gishyita Sector allegedly killed his pregnant wife and hid the body in the kitchen before it was discovered by local leaders.

Alice Nyirakamana, a family neighbour, alleges that Mpakaniye killed his wife after a quarrel that started at a bar. She explained that immediately the couple arrived home they heard a woman screaming for help.

"They had spent a long time together in the bar but finally we heard Nyirakamana screaming late at night. We rushed to their home but no one could enter since they had locked the house. We went back to call local leaders, but found only Mpakaniye in the house,” Nyirakamana told The New Times at the Police post on Thursday.

She added that the man’s shirt was soaked with blood.
Nyirakamana, said they quizzed Mpakaniye about the whereabouts of his wife, but he instead threatened to beat them. However, Police officials say the suspect denied the charges, claiming the woman was killed by unknown assailants.

"I am not responsible for the death of my wife. But I warned her several times not to delay in bars,” he reportedly said. The body was taken to Kibuye Hospital for post-mortem but the report was yet to be released by yesterday.
