NORTHERN PROVINCE

A Frw300 million modern market was officially opened yesterday in Musanze amidst massive jubilation. Traders took new positions in what was described as one of the most modern markets in the country.

Expected to accommodate over 900 traders, the market has specialized departments, from agricultural products to commercial stores, microfinance offices, and restaurants.

Before the market was built, the grounds had become a big hub for thieves and night prostitutes, with no order or sanitation.

"We lacked space for selling our products,” said trader Claudia Mukumana.

"We had to endure rain and sunshine in Kariyeri.

Speaking during the distribution of apartments, located within the market itself, vice-mayor in charge of economic affairs Anonciata Budengeri said that the new facility would only add value to the business sector in the area.

Budengeri asked the traders to improve on the value of their products and involve in modern profit-oriented ventures as taxes were due to rise.

The construction of the market was deemed necessary after the return of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who started selling Irish potatoes, maize and maracuja in large quantities.
