Dear counsellor,

My parents want me to go for vocational training arguing it will give me better opportunities in future, yet I still want to continue with high my school education. How can I convince them to let me continue with my studies?

It’s a sign of honour to obey your parents for this makes them feel respected. However, by virtue of being a distinctive human being, your biggest loyalty should to a certain extent be driven by your passion and dreams so as to benefit from the innate gifts that your natural abilities have to offer. Use success stories to explain to your parents how your path is likely to help you pursue further studies to sail you to even greater economic heights

Your career is a self-determining venture that needs careful selection basing on your internal abilities. Yes it’s true that your parents want you to succeed at everything and never get hurt but they do not own your abilities, interests and priorities. The higher you set your own aspirations, the more you increase your chances of living a cheerful and fulfilling future

Do not violently defy their decisions but use your emotional appeal to convince them about the relevance of continuing with your straight-line education and be sure to improve your academic performance. Remember that they love you and have high expectations in you. This is why they want to see you achieve the best in future. But following your passion isn’t a sign of disobedience. It’s all about working through your best interest and comfort zones to reach your dream in order to benefit from the gifts your best self has to offer. Otherwise you will study to please them but not meet your dreams. Wish you success in your career. But it’s important to carefully listen to your parents because they will always have your best interests at heart.
