Rwanda U-20 men’s handball team got off to a perfect start at the ongoing International Handball Federation (IHF) Africa Zone 5B Challenge tournament defeating South Sudan in their Group B opener on Sunday.

The biennial event got underway on Saturday and will run until December 22 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda. It has attracted the best young talents from six East African countries namely; Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and South Sudan.

Rwanda, who are seeking to end a seven-year title jinx, began their campaign defeating South Sudan 44-30, with Emmanuel Murwanashyaka netting a game-high 11 goals to lead his team to victory.

The loss, ended South Sudan’s hopes after they arrived in Uganda late and missed their would-be first game against then hosts, who forfeit points. Uganda takes on Rwanda today at 2pm as both sides aiming for a win to finish on top of the group.

In another game in Group A, Burundi recovered from the 37-20 loss to Kenya on Saturday to defeat Tanzania 24-23 on Sunday.

Tanzania will play Kenya today and the top two teams from each group will advance to semi-finals set for tomorrow.
