SC Kiyovu will be seeking to end their 11-year winless record against APR FC when the two sides lock horns in the national football league Match-day 9 on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium.
Remarkably, the Mumena-based outfit has never beaten the record 15-time league champions since 2005 in a 2-1 win when the army side was under the tutelage of former Rwanda international Valens Muvala.
The defending champions have prevailed every time the two teams met in the last 11 years, however; current Kiyovu coach Aloys Kanamugire, says it is high time the ‘Green Baggies’ ended their woeful record against Rwanda’s most successful club.
Looking ahead of today’s clash, Kanamugure admitted, "We have had a poor record against APR for quite a long time, APR are of course a very strong team and I believe they were in their best form, but it is time to end that winless run against them.”
This season, Kiyovu have been on and off track having won only three games, drawn two and lost three of their opening eight matches, which leaves them on 10th position with 11 points, nine behind today’s opponents, who have won six and drawn two.
Kanamugire thinks his youthful side will be a lot more confident, especially coming off a comfortable 3-1 win against Etincelles last weekend.
However, the Nyamirambo-based side face a daunting test as unbeaten APR will be aiming to win the game and pull level with arch rivals and league leaders Rayon Sports after Djuma Masudi’s stumbled against Mukura Victory Sports on Friday.
Godfroid Okoko’s Mukura took the lead in the sixth minute through Christopher Ndayishimiye’s penalty and Moussa Camara headed home the equalizer for the visitors in the 45th minute.
APR assistant coach Yves Rwasamanzi said, "This is a very crucial game because it is an opportunity to pull level points with Rayon Sports at the top of the table. We expect a difficult game as always but we shall go to win.”
Meanwhile, Musanze FC face struggling Marines at Nyakinama stadium while Sunrise FC will be up against second from bottom Amagaju FC at Nyagatare ground
