Incumbent Rwanda National Basketball Federation (FERWABA) president Desire Mugwiza has declared his intention to run for a second term. The elections are scheduled for Sunday at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.

Speaking to Times Sport on Monday, Mugwiza stated that his team has done a lot in the first four-year term and if he is re-elected, they will continue to build on the gains already made.

"Infrastructure and youth talent development will be our objective in the second term,” he said. Mugwiza was elected FERWABA president in 2013 replacing Eric Kalisa Salongo, who resigned at the end of 2012, citing personal reasons.

When asked how he plans to address the long-standing problem of lack of sponsorship for the national championship, Mugwiza stated that, "We are in negotiations with Bralirwa and other companies and hopefully, we shall have (a sponsor) on board as soon as possible.”

Three other positions will be up for grabs, and these include that of first vice president, formerly held by Cercle Sportif de Kigali’s Jean Claude Murigo. The Hoops Rwanda’s Pascale Mugwaneza has expressed interest in this post.

There is also the post of second vice president, which is being eyed by United Generation Basketball Club’s Richard Nyirishema (former technical adviser). Fredrick Makuza has held the position since 2012 as a flag bearer of former league side KBC that ceased to exist in 2014.

Claudette Habimana Mugwaneza of Ubumwe Women Basketball Club has expressed interest to replace Nyirishema as the technical advisor.
