Police in the City of Kigali have arrested two men suspected of running a teachers' ghost scheme through which they were defrauding teachers.

Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu identified the suspects as Frederic Uwitonze Safari and Ben Mutabazi, who were arrested last Friday in Gasabo District.

The duo is currently detained at Remera Police station pending further investigations.

According to Supt. Hitayezu, the culprits, by the time of their arrest, had already defrauded a number of teachers to a tune of Rwf7 million.

"Police received complaints from some teachers, who had been duped, acting on that information, Uwitonze and Mutabazi were immediately taken into custody. So far, preliminary investigations have established that they conned over Rwf7 million from a couple of teachers,” he said.

"They had started a fake company which they called ‘teachers shop’ and they were telling unsuspecting teachers to buy shares,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

"Investigations are still underway to establish whether there are other people connected to this criminal act, and the exact number of victims and amount of money involved.”

He appealed to members of the public and other unknown victims, who have more information, to come forward to supplement ongoing investigations.
