RWANDA continued to stump their authority as one of the region’s volleyball giants after claiming the ladies’ crown in the two-day International Beach Volleyball Championship staged in Uganda over the weekend.

Rwanda’s Emilienne Uwineza and Jeanette Niyigena salvaged a 2-1 set win over the Kenyan pair (Viola Aleku and Joan Yelena) in the final.

Rwanda took the first set 24-22 but the Kenyans quickly leveled proceedings with a hard fought 21-19 to set up a decisive set battle.
Uwineza and Niyigena regrouped to cruise to a 15-6 victory in the final set.

However, it was not to be in the men’s category as defending champions Jean Luc Mbonyuwontuya and Dieudonne Singirankabo crushed out in the quarter-final after losing to Patrick Owino and Ibrahim Oduor from Kenya.

They lost 1-2 (15-21, 25-23, 18-20). The men’s title was claimed by homeboys-Gadaffi Tamale and Pierre Kamugasha.

At the end of the day, the winning pairs received trophies and an undisclosed cash prize.

Rwanda fielded five teams; two in the men’s section and three women teams.
