Rayon Sports, one of the oldest football clubs in Rwanda, will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, according to the club’s top management.

Established in 1967 in what is the current Nyanza District, Rayon Sports was formed after the likes of SC Kiyovu, Mukura Victory Sports and Amagaju FC. The club moved to Kigali in 1986 before moving back to Nyanza in 2012, but after just one season, the club is back in Kigali again.

Speaking to Times Sport on Tuesday, the club president Dennis Gacinya said that, "Today Rayon Sports boasts of the biggest number of fans in the country and everyone associated with the club is extremely proud of what it has achieved over the years.”

"We are planning to organise a big function to celebrate 50 years of Rayon Sports existence and so we call upon every fan and member of the club everywhere in the world, whether in Asia, Africa, and America to come and join us on that special day,” Gacinya noted.

The club was formed from an idea proposed by Priest Arnot Channoine, who was the head teacher of Roi Nyanza Christian College.

Rayon Sports have seven national league titles, a record 8 Rwanda Cup (Peace Cup titles), and one CECAFA Club Championship title in 1998 in Zanzibar.
