The national Junior Tennis team today begun hunt for medals at the ITF East Africa Junior, 18 and under tournament taking place in Nairobi, in Kenya.
The three week tournament that attracts young elite tennis players aged 18 and below from around the world will run until December 10 and will be played under three phases known as KENS.
The KEN1 which starts today will run until November 26 and Rwanda is being represented by a team of seven players, three boys and four girls under the guidance of their head coach Jean Pierre Nshimiyimana.
The team in the boys’ category includes; Ernest Habiyambere (17), Etienne Niyigena (18) and Fabrice Tuyishime (16).
In the girls’ fray, Rwanda is being represented by Chantal Mutuyimana (16), Clenia Niyonshima (15), Evelyne Kwizera (15) and Olive Tuyisenge (17).
In their first round matches that are scheduled started at 8am local time, Etienne Niyigena took on Tanzania’s Sulle Omary Hamisi at court one while Fabrice Tuyishime played against Muhammad Raza Sawani from Pakistan at centre court as team captain Ernest Habiyambere took on Oliver Jevtovic from United states of America.
In the girls’ category, Clenia Niyonshima will lock horns with Daevania Achong from the Netherlands on court one at 11am while Evelyne Kwizera played against Deeksha Manju Prasad on court two at 9am.
Chantal Mutuyimana takes on South Africa’s Makayla Loubser at public service 4 while Olive Tuyisenge will play against Oleksandra Balaba from Ukraine later at the same court.
