Care to promote women sports in Rwanda

A United Kingdom based non-government organization; Care is set to start promoting women sports in Rwanda. Care global ambassador Sheila Johnson told Times Sport yesterday that Care in partnership with Nike are set to join forces for women empowerment through sports.

Johnson who was making her maiden visit to Rwanda also said that her visit was aimed at developing a sporting culture that enables and values the full involvement of women in every aspect of sport.

”We will offer support technically and funding to Rwandan women who engage in sports because their commitment to sports will build communication skills,” Johnson said, adding that the most important thing is to build a career for Rwandan women and girls who are engaged in sports.

Johnson who also acts as the president of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) urged Rwandan women to engage in all sports disciplines with basketball sport inclusive as she expects to send top American sports personalities to emphasize the need of women empowerment in sports.

Johnson offered soccer balls and a few Nike t-shorts and pledged to send managers who will tutor Rwandan women into good and professional coaches.

The American millionaire was invited by the Association of Kigali women in Sports (Akwos) led by Felicite Rwemalika.

Rwemalika is a member of the Women’s Win Board of Directors. In this role she brings provide underprivileged girls and women with access to safe sport facilities, appropriate clothing and the right equipment to play with.

Women Win is a fund that empowers women and girls through sports globally. Meanwhile, the world’s leading designer, marketer and distributor of athletic footwear, apparel, equipment, Nike injected $20000 worth of kits to Akwos.

The kits which constituted boots and jerseys were given out to different women clubs which make-up the local women sports association late last month.
