The national golfers’ team will be hoping to come out of their shells when the East African Golf Challenge tees off today at the Leisure Lodge & Golf Resort Club in Mombasa, Kenya.
Kigali Golf Club (KGC) sent out a strong eight-man team yesterday as Rwanda seeks to win their first ever silverware in the competition.
In-form Olivier Munyaneza, fresh from a runners-up finish at the Rwanda Open will lead the nation’s charge for silverware against familiar foes in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi.
KGC’s president Jack Kayonga led the team that also has experienced golfers in fierce competitor Davis Kashaka, Jules Dusabe, Celestine Habineza, Emmanuel Nsengamungu, Fraterne Rubangura, Ernest Ndayisenga and team captain Steven Katwiremu.
"We have a balanced side with good experience and we are going to challenge for silverware,” Kashaka who also doubles as the team manager said.
The 54-hole event tees off this morning with a singles round. The teams will then regroup for a four-some on Wednesday before winding up with another singles round on Thursday. This round will also feature a contest for the ‘longest drive’.
At the end of the day, the scores will be totalled up to determine the overall winner. For the last six editions, Kenya has dominated the annual event and the fact that Kenyan golfers are playing in their backyard makes it an even bigger task for the tourists.
Last year, Rwanda finished fourth but before the team’s departure, Kashaka said that the team was desperate to make amends.
"Honestly, we have enough quality in the side to put up a stiff challenge,” he confidently said. Meanwhile, Kiboko tours, a local travel agency has staked Frw1m should the team win the competition.
