As Rwanda prepares to start commercial silk production, the Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) is playing a leading role in training farmers countrywide.

The move is to popularise silk production and trigger economic development in the country. The Chief of General Staff James Kabarebe said the army is collaborating with the government in the campaign.

He was optimistic that when Rwandans start commercial silk production, more employment will be created thereby reducing poverty in the country.

"I have visited some of the world’s biggest silk producing companies and have realised that even industrial wastes are equally very important,” said Gen. Kabarebe.

"They generate money.”

Silk is produced from silkworms which feed on mulberry leaves. One hectare of land can produce 30 tonnes of mulberry in a year which can produce two tonnes of cocoons.

One kilogram of cocoons costs $4 (about Frw2,180). Eight kilograms produce one kilogram of thread which costs $40 (about Frw21,000).
