Rwanda’s, Joseph Areruya will go into Stage Two of Tour du Rwanda 2016 wearing the yellow jersey. Areruya leads fellow cyclists in total points after Stage One of the 2016 annual tournament.

However, it was Canadian Guillaume Boivin who took Stage One though by a small margin as over 17 riders finished at almost the same time (2h12'35').

Stage one of the 2016 Tour du Rwanda started from Kicukiro to Ngoma District in the Eastern Province, covering 96.8km.

Eritrean, Amanuel Meron of Bike Aid leads in the mountain classification.

Areruya, 20, finished second in last year’s 938.5km edition clocking a total of 23 hours 56 minutes and 35 seconds.

He came behind champion Jean-Bosco Nsengimana, who won the eight-stage race using 23 hours 54 minutes and 50 seconds, hence becoming the second Rwandan to win the event since 2009 when it became part of the UCI Africa Tour.

Areruya is among the 15 riders that have been selected by Rwanda Athletics Federation (FERWACY) to carry Rwanda’s flag during the 2016 competition.
