Timothy Rugg of Canada’s Team LowestRates has won the 3.3km opening prologue of the 8th edition of Tour du Rwanda that took place today around Amahoro National Stadium.
The U.S-born rider shocked the thousands of spectators that were at the finish line after posting four minutes and 25 microseconds hence sending a clear message of what his rivals are likely to face in the next seven stages.
Rugg beat his nearest rival Aman Werkilul Ghebreigzabhier from Eriteria, who rides for South Africa’s Dimension Data for Qhubeka (04’03”10).
Rwandan Joseph Areruya, riding for Rwamagana-based Les Amis Sportifs, was the first home rider on this list after finishing in the third place using four minutes, three minutes and ninety five micro-seconds.
Defending champion and prologue record holder, Jean-Bosco Nsengimana, riding for Germay-based UCI Continental Team Stradalli Bike Aid, finished a distant fifth clocking 04’04”32.
In the sixth place was the 2014 champion Valens Ndayisenga, who was highly expected to win this opening stage. The Dimension Data for Qhubeka rider posted a time of 04’05”57.
On Monday, the riders will hit the road for stage one, starting from Kicukiro and head to Ngoma District in the Eastern Province 96.8km race.
