The idiom "All work with no play makes a Jack a dull boy” holds true, and for the first time, residents of Bugesera district will be treated to a ‘Sports and Games Day’, which will be organized by Gasore Serge Foundation today in Ntarama.
Serge Gasore Foundation is a non-profit local sports organization founded and run by former-long distance runner, Serge Gasore.
The ‘Sports and Games Day’ will be co-sponsored by the Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF), Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY) and the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee, with the intent to promote and develop sport in Bugesera district.
The Day will include three sports activities that include; cross country athletics race, cycling competition a women football match between women league sides Bugesera and Inyemera FC from Gicumbi district.
Athletes will compete in 8.10km (women) and 12km (men), with the winners pocketing cash prizes that range from Rwf50,000, Rwf40,000 and Rwf70,000 respectively.
"The object is to make sure that we produce have one or two athletes from Bugesera, who will compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” event organizer Gasore told Sunday Sport.
In June this year, Serge Gasore Foundation organized what was dubbed the ‘Peace and Reconciliation Athletics race’.
Olympian Claudette Mukasakindi won the 15km women’s category after clocking 54 minutes, 8 seconds and 82 microseconds, ahead of Celine Iranzi, who finished in second position.
Félicien Muhitira produced an impressive display to win the men’s category ahead of Alex Nizeyimana and Protais Ntawuyirushintege, who finished second and third respectively.
The junior men’s 8km race was won by upcoming youngster James Sugira, ahead of 19-year-old Jean Vianney Myasiro.
