In today’s fast-paced world, recognising the significance of mind-body wellness is crucial, as the seamless interaction between mental and physical well-being plays a vital role in nurturing a balanced and satisfying life.
A recent study by the Washington University School of Medicine, published in April 2023 unveiled that sections of the brain responsible for movement are linked with networks associated with thinking, planning, and the regulation of involuntary bodily processes such as blood pressure, and heartbeat. The findings represent a literal linkage of body and mind in the very structure of the brain.

The International Mind-Body Wellness Day, which is celebrated every year on January 3, was created not only to learn more about the mind-body connection but an opportunity to celebrate how a healthy mind and emotions can lead to a healthy body.
As the global community marks the observance, we take a closer look at the interplay between mental and physical well-being, as well as practices that facilitate and enhance the connection.
Discussing the correlation between the mind and body, Rulinda Kwizera, a clinical psychologist at Lifeline Organisation, noted that stress, for example, not only affects work performance but can also manifest physically through symptoms such as fatigue, heart issues, and high blood pressure.
He highlighted psychosomatic effects, illustrating how mental issues can manifest as physical ailments. For example, missing or losing a loved one may disrupt sleep, elevate blood pressure, and contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety, he said.
Kwizera called for a holistic approach to well-being, stating, "Taking care of your body is taking care of your mind and vice versa. Physical exercise is highlighted as a beneficial practice for both aspects.”

He also encouraged stress management techniques like mindfulness, sufficient sleep, healthy social media usage, and regular checkups to enhance overall health.
Gloria Umwali, a psychologist at Geruka Healing Centre, highlighted the interdependence of the body and mind, emphasising how the state of one can be influenced and reflected in the other.
"Some diseases such as cancer have been linked to some extended psychological turmoil. Simply put, when the mind is not at peace, the body can eventually get sick too, from that same thing that’s preoccupying our mental and emotional states,” she said.
Umwali highlighted that maintaining good psychological health positively impacts the body, citing indications of a healthy mind that include a strong immune system, good sleep patterns, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
An optimistic mindset, characterised by positive and uplifting thoughts, further enhances physical health by boosting the immune system.

Umwali emphasised that cultivating optimism involves intentional choices to navigate life’s challenges, learn from experiences, and avoid getting stuck in negative emotions like resentment or anger.
Umwali recommended specific practices for fostering the mind-body connection, including physical exercises that lead to increased strength and resilience in both the body and mind, enhancing cognitive functions and memory.
"The same thing applies to what we put in our bodies; a healthy diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, for example) empowers our mental space. A good sleeping routine also contributes to both our physical and mental wellness,” she added.
Alexis Havugimana, a yoga instructor at Live Well Rwanda, an awareness-based company, explained that yoga’s practices like body movements, breathing exercises, and meditation, help promote harmony between mind and body.
"The awareness of the mind to the body allows the mind to come from the outside activities and brings the mind to the body,” he said. "Stress relief is a significant benefit, and cultivating awareness through practices like mindfulness and meditation is crucial in managing stress effectively.”
Mindfulness is a practice of focusing on the present moment, without judgment or interpretation. It can be practiced during meditation or everyday activities, like walking, cooking, or cleaning.

Havugimana highlighted the importance of connecting with one’s body, listening to its signals, and recognising individual stressors for a more mindful and stress-resilient life.
"Being aware is a journey of growth; the more you practice, the more you become aware,” he said. "In awareness, we have to be aware of our stressors, and if you are aware of your stressors, you can be more attentive to know what can help you.”
