MUHANGA — District officials need to develop good communication skills in order to enhance service delivery, the governor of the Southern Province implored last week.

Fidel Ndayisaba, made the remarks last Thursday while handing over certificates to over 20 Muhanga district officials who had successfully completed eight-day training in communication systems and local government leadership.

The training was sponsored by the Rwanda Institute of Management and Administration (RIAM) at Murambi.

The participants included vice Mayors, directors of departments, and all area executive secretaries.

Ndayisaba said, "With such training opportunities, Muhanga should be able to beat other districts in achieving performance contracts, and rally people behind government programmes through quality service delivery.”

Ndayisaba also asked Muhanga to utilise its proximity to RIAM, to empower district leaders with competitive skills.

Muhanga district ranks fourth in implementing performance contracts, according to the recent evaluation in the province. 

Yvonne Mutakwasuku, the Muhanga Mayor, attributes this seemingly poor performance to poor communication, laziness and poor attitude towards work.

"The training is timely as it will improve the district’s performance and service delivery. It will address the problems of poor communication and working secretively; which have affected work output,” Mutakwasuku said.

On behalf of the trainees, Celse Gasana, described the training as a turning point among district officials.

During the training, the participants were also briefed on team work and being responsible.
