The 2016/17 Second Division League will kick off on November 19, with 22 teams in contention for the two promotion to the topflight division up for grabs, according to the national football governing body, FERWAFA. The 22 teams have been placed in two groups A and B. Group A has Rwamagana City FC, UR, Sorwathe FC, Vision FC, Gitikinyoni FC, AS Muhanga, Aspor FC, Akagera FC, Vision J.N, Nyagatare FC and Hope FC.

Group B is comprised of Intare FC, SEC Academy, Isonga FC, Miroplast FC, Rugende Training Center, United Stars, La Jeunesse, Heroes FC, Etoile de l’est, Interforce FC and Esperance FC.

The top four clubs in each group will progress to the semi-final playoffs were the two finalists will be promoted to the national league.

Last season, Kirehe and Pepiniere Football Clubs earned promotion to the top flight division for the first time in their history—they took the places of AS Muhanga and Rwamagana City FC, who were relegated following a disappointing crusade in the 2015/2016 season.

Pepiniere won the second division league after defeating Kirehe 4-3 in penalty shootouts against after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
