A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Bugesera District in connection with counterfeiting and distributing currencies.
Ajey Manzi, who has been a wanted man and in hiding over similar crimes, was arrested on Thursday in Nyabagendwa Cell of Ririma Sector.
He was found in possession of counterfeit money amounting to Rwf141,000 in Rwf5,000 and Rwf2,000 denominations.
He is currently detained at Ririma Police Station pending further investigations.
Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province Emmanuel Kayigi said Manzi had gone into hiding after three women arrested with fake currency notes implicated him to be their supplier.
"Upon arrest, they named Manzi as their supplier and the following day when their relatives saw him [Manzi], they immediately informed local leaders and nearby residents, who arrested and called Police in Ririma to take up the case,” he said.
He commended the residents for their community policing approach.
"To break this malpractice, the business community requires utmost vigilance because, that way, there will be no market for counterfeiters and when they try, through this partnership, they will be arrested,” Kayigi said.
