Over 50 students of Groupe Scolaire A.D.B Nyarutarama have undergone training in making modern beehives.

The students, specialising in the carpentry underwent a six week training to help them earn income.

"The five model hives that students were trained to make are not common in this country and the purpose was to give them an opportunity to earn money from beekeeping. A modern beehive costs between Rwf35, 000 and Rwf60, 000 and is less time consuming,” Jean Marie Nzabamwita, the director of the school, said.

The students last week completed the course in the making the Langstroth Hive, Special Hive, Kenyan Hive and Queen Multiplication Hive, and THE traditional hive.

Marcellin Kanimba, the general manager of K+H Hilltop Honey, the company that sponsored the programme, noted that there was need to help the students come up with innovations and help them understand that beekeeping is not just for rural people or the uneducated.

"We chose students who are learning carpentry to learn how modern beehives are made so that they can have a chance to tap into its market and also encourage them to venture into beekeeping. This is something unique to the Rwandan market and East Africa as well, so equipping them with these skills encourages them to venture into beekeeping as the youth,” he said.
