A beautifully executed long range goal from new signing Muhadjiri Hakizimana was enough to secure victory for defending champions APR FC against Amagaju FC in their first match of the 2016/2017 national football league played on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium.
The Amavubi midfielder, signed from Mukura VS last season, scored the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute from well over 25 yards. APR dominated most of the game, getting eleven corners.
Patrick Sibomana hit the crossbar with a well taken free kick while Buteera, Hakizimana, Sibomana and Onesme Twizerimana, who replaced Maxime Sekamana, all had opportunities to increase APR’s tally but failed to beat Amagaju goalkeeper Regis Shyaka.
Amagaju improved in the second half and got a few chances through Hussein Shaban and Amani Mugisho but could not find the back of net.
Yves Rwasamanzi’s APR had three other chances in the second half through Buteera, who played a key role in midfield, Sibomana, Nkezingabo and Hakizimana.
Elsewhere, Sunrise beat AS Kigali 1-0 at Kicukiro Stadium thanks to Syprien Sinamenye’s goal. Newly promoted Kirehe FC beat Musanze at Kirehe ground courtesy of Simon Shauri while Espoir drew away against Marines 0-0 at Umuganda Stadium.
