NYAGATARE — The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), has donated 400 bicycles to adult literacy tutors in Nyagatare district. The donation was handed over on Thursday to the beneficiaries drawn from five Sectors of the district.

"We have facilitated you with bicycles to stand out in the community as role models,” said Raban Rutare, the head of ADRA’s Rwanda Integrated Rural Education Programme (RIREP).

Officiating at the function at ADRA office in Nyagatare town, Immaculate Mukamuhizi, the vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs told the beneficiaries to act as ambassadors.

"The bicycles should be used in line with your duties,” Mukamuhizi said, and urged the tutors to ensure that the trainees attend the lessons.

"We want to build trust. The government is helping many illiterate people feel loved and not forgotten,” she added.

27,000 people have so far graduated with literacy skills after studying for two years, the vice Mayor said. She added that the programme enhances the district’s performance.

A total to 23,000 adult learners were enrolled this year in the whole district, according to reports from ADRA.

Speaking at the function, ADRA’s country director, Daniel De-Santos, Santos said: "Success in education has to be at all levels. We are responding to the government’s policy of education for all.”

He told the beneficiaries to use the facilities to improve service delivery. The beneficiaries said the facilities would solve their transport problems.

"This is a solution to the travel challenges I have been facing,” Daniel Ntiyonzima, one of the instructors from the Rukomo Sector said.
