To immerse himself into the local music scene, Ugandan saxophonist and composer Herbert Rock is set to launch his first album, Sax in the City, on October 28, at Kigali Serena Hotel.
The saxophonist’s album features music by Rwandan and Ugandan musicians, including Intore Masamba, King James, Jean Paul Samputu, Charly and Nina, and Jose Chameleon, among others.
The singles on the album are Agatako, Ndagukunda, Agasaza, Nyaruguru, Yantumye, Indoro, Vulu Vulu, and Sax in the City, the cover of the album.
"The launch on October 28 in Kigali is set to be special and great energy will be brought to the stage, a fresh approach to my performances,” said Herbert Rock.
After years of performing in Uganda, Herbert relocated to Kigali in 2014 and joined Neptunez band. Since then his tenor sax has become a regular sight on stages around Kigali. The musician, however, parted ways with the band last month to persue a solo music career.
The 30-year-old cites influences drawn from many saxophonists like Kirk Whalum, Grover Washington Jr, Sonny Rollings, Stan Gates and Dexter Gordon, who have played a major role in his journey.
