Ubumwe women basketball club missed out on a chance to compete at this year’s FIBA-Africa Club Championships after finishing third at the just concluded FIBA-Africa Zone V Club Championship.

The regional event began on October 1 and ended on Friday evening at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with Kenya Ports Authority claiming the women’s title while Uganda’s City Oilers won the men's crown to qualify for continental championship slated for December in Maputo, Mozambique.

City Oilers were crowned champions after defeating Kenya’s Ulinzi Warriors in the final 72-49. The Oilers dominated and led in all four quarters; 18-9, 33-21, 53-40 and 72-49.

Meanwhile, the women category comprised of seven clubs playing each other on a round robin format. KPA finished top with eleven points, one ahead of United States International University (USIU) while Rwanda’s Ubumwe finished third and Uganda Christian University Canons came fourth.

Despite Ubumwe finishing with a better point difference (63 points) compared to UCU (54 pts) and USIU (12 pts), the technical committee considered the head-to-head between the three clubs, which gave USIU an upper hand in the final rankings.

In their meetings, USIU defeated Ubumwe 81-74 before also beating UCU 57-53 while Ubumwe also defeated UCU 88-85.

That implied that USIU had dropped a total of 138 points and conceded 127 points remaining with a difference of 11 points while Ubumwe scored 166 points but conceded 166 points hence a deficit of four with UCU scoring 138 points conceding 145 points remaining with a deficit of seven.

In the meantime, Rwanda’s debutants Patriots won a bronze medal after beating USIU in the third-place playoff 67-60 while Espoir finished fifth following their 69-47 over UCU.

City Oilers shooting guard Enabu Jimmy and KPA’s Celine Okumu (shooting guard) were crowned the tournament’s Most Valuable Players.

The regional tournament had attracted a total of 17 clubs; 10 in the men category and seven in the women category from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and hosts Tanzania.
