Trōcaire has been in Rwanda since 1994 working through local partners impacting lives, contributing to social justice and ending poverty. The organization is inspired by the Catholic Social Teaching to work with communities to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, and to empower them to make  lasting change in their lives and ensure duty bearers work the for common good.

In Rwanda, it is currently working in 11 out of 30 districts and  partnering with 24 local partners.

Trōcaire  works alongside partners to address and respond to global injustice that leads to poverty and inequality.

Talking during the official launch of their Country Strategic Plan 2016-2020, at Umubano Hotel in Kigali on 30/09/2016, Dony Mazingaizo, the Country Director said that Trōcaire has contributed immensely to development in Rwanda in the areas of agriculture value chain development, conflict transformation, livelihoods and citizen participation over the last 21 years.

Mazingaizo said  that going forward the organization’s work in Rwanda will be informed by their newly launched strategic plan which is aligned to the global strategy of  Trōcaire focusing on 3 pillars; Women empowerment, Resource Rights and Preparing for and Responding to Emergencies.

He underscored the importance of working with various stakeholders, including the Central and Local government, employees of the organization, beneficiaries, and partners, and that Trōcaire counts on everyone’s efforts to meet their goals as well as contribute to the country’s vision 2020.

"I would like to say that it is an exciting time for Trōcaire Rwanda as we roll out our country strategic plan over the next 5 years and engage various stakeholders including central and local government, partners and beneficiaries to deliver on our strategy and indeed contribute to Rwanda’s vision 2020.” said Mazingaizo.

Trōcaire believes that true transformative changes occur through addressing power imbalances at societal and institutional levels, which is why the organization is known globally for working towards transforming the lives of the poor, marginalized women and men including those who do not have access to basic needs, especially those discriminated against, exploited or affected by crises.

Among  the key areas they will focus on during the 5-year plan is climate change which is a reality globally with Rwanda not being an exception. Trōcaire will continue to take an Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM) approach to deal with climate change and livelihoods of communities.

"Already exciting work on water management including local level climate change adaptation and building water tanks and dams has been happening in a few districts with exciting prospects to scale up such work in the coming years” Mr. Mazingaizo added.

Today, Trōcaire through Caritas Rwanda takes  part in the emergency response to the Burundi refugee crisis in collaboration with other implementing partners operating in Mahama refugee camp.

With the mandate to ensure the community affected by crises receive timely, accountable and needs-based humanitarian assistance, Trōcaire has awarded a grant to Caritas Rwanda to implement a project for supporting lactating mothers, people with disability and single mothers to meet their basic needs and livelihoods.

Caritas Rwanda is providing food supplement  to 2927 lactating mothers with children between 7 to 24 months old, and 519 people with disability.

"The food supplement is very important in such situations since some people do not have enough means to purchase enough food in order to improve their diet,” says Abbe Emmanuel Rubagumya, the Deputy Secretary General of Caritas Rwanda.
