Rwanda’s Ubumwe women basketball club takes on Uganda Christian University (UCU) in the last round robin game at the ongoing FIBA-Africa Zone V Club Championships in Dar-es Salaam, Tanzania today.
Five of the seven women clubs taking part in this year’s regional tournament, are still in contention for the two slots available to qualify for the FIBA-Africa Club Championships that will be held in Madagascar in December.
Ubumwe, who are currently in second place with eight points from five games, play their final game this afternoon against table leaders and still unbeaten UCU, who also have eight points having played a game less.
Third-placed KPA (7pts) take on JKT while USUI (7pts) and KCCA (6pts) also face-off in their penultimate game and a win for either side would boost their chances to finish in the top two.
On Wednesday, Ubumwe kept their qualification hopes alive after overwhelming Tanzania’s Don Bosco Lioness 95-54.
Center Charlotte Umugwaneza dropped a game high 22 points and nine rebounds while shooting guard Ines Nezerwa Ines scored 21 points and 5 rebounds and point guard Sandra Kantore dropped 12 points and three assists.
"I am happy that we won the game with a big points difference which boosts our chance to qualify as second-placed team, our focus now is to beat UCU and then wait for results from the other,” said Ubumwe head coach Jacques Bahige.
Meanwhile, in the men category, which has reached the semi-finals, Patriots will battle Kenya’s Ulinzi Warriors at 6pm before City Oilers playing USIU at8pm and the winners will face-off in tomorrow’s final scheduled to take place at the National Stadium at 6pm.
