Patriots storm FIBA-Africa Zone V semi-finals

Debutants, Patriots Basketball Club on Monday became Rwanda’s first team to advance to the semi-finals of the ongoing FIBA-Africa Zone V Club Championship that is taking place in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania after overcoming South Sudan’s National Engineering in their penultimate group A game.

Debutants Patriots Basketball Club on Monday became Rwanda’s first team to advance to the semi-finals of the ongoing FIBA-Africa Zone V Club Championship that is taking place in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania after overcoming South Sudan’s National Engineering in their penultimate group A game.

Patriots who are still unbeaten at the tournament sealed their semi-final berth with a game to spare after convincingly defeating National Engineering 67-45.

Henry Mwinuka’s side led in all four qaurters13-10, 20-12, 55-32 and 67-45 with the help of team captain Ali Kazingufu Kubwimana who scored the game’s high 12 points.

"It is a great to have reached the semi-finals on our debut however our target is to win this whole competition. We want to maintain this good team work and win all our remaining games. We are very optimistic and confident that we can win this tournament,” said Patriots captain Kubwimana

The Rwanda Basketball League champions rest today and will play their final group A game tomorrow against USIU of Kenya.

Patriots are likely to face either City Oilers of Uganda or Ulinzi warriors of Kenya in the semi-finals who are now unbeaten in group B. The two are playing their third games today while Rwanda’s representative in this group, Espoir, also take a break today.

Espoir which had also made a perfect start winning two games might miss out on a semi-final spot after losing to Ulinzi on Monday. They play big title favorites City Oilers in their final group game tomorrow.

Meanwhile Ubumwe that are Rwanda’s sole representative in the women category are playing USIU today seeking for their third straight win in four games.

The women category comprised of seven are playing each other in a round robin format and the top two will play the finals slated for Friday.
