Rwanda Revenue Authority women volleyball club (RRA) and University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies (UTB) are the champions of the 2016 Alphonse Rutsindura memorial tournament.

RRA beat Ruhango VC in the final while UTB overcame a select side made up of former Petit Seminaire Virgos Fideris de Butare students (ASEVIF) in the finals played on Sunday at UR-Huye campus gymnasium.

In the final of the women category, RRA beat Ruhango 3-1—Ruhango took the opening set 25-21 before Jean de Dieu Masumbuko’s team fought back to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-15 and 25-20.

There were only three teams in the senior women category. RRA reached final after defeating their bitter rivals APR VC 2-0 and Ruhango beat the army side 2-0.

In men’s category, UTB won the title after beating the former Petit Seminaire de Butare 3-1 in the final of the two-day tournament that was missing the top three league sides namely; University of Kibungo (UNIK), APR and Kirehe VC.Group Scolaire de Butare beat Lycee de Nyanza 3-2 in the final to win the youth category.

The Rutsindura memorial tournament had been put on hold for the last couple of years for lack of sponsors but the former students of Petit Seminaire Virgos Fideris de Butare organized themselves to have event this year.

Former national volleyball coach Alphonse Rutsindura was born 1958 in Ndora in Cyamukuza, Gisagara District; he studied at Petit Seminari of Butare and IPN (Institut Pédagogique National) in Butare.

He was killed during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi alongside with his kids Alain Iliza, Arsene Izere and Aliba Icyeza with wife Vérène Mukarubayiza. Only his first born, Alaine Ikirezi survived the genocide that claimed over a million people.
