KARONGI — Residents of Bwishyura Sector in Karongi district have been urged to join cooperatives as a vehicle to fight poverty, in a call made Tuesday, during the sector security meeting held at Gatwaro stadium.

During the meeting, which also aimed at addressing challenges facing the Sector, residents were asked to join health insurance schemes commonly known as Mituelle de Sante.

Addressing the meeting, different officials at the Sector level pointed out that the country needs people who work together and promote their welfare through forming cooperative societies.

The residents were reminded that forming cooperatives and registering for the health insurance schemes- were key factors that made other districts perform better during the recent evaluation of performance contracts, after the second quarter.

Among the seven districts of the Western Province, Karongi district emerged second last on the performance contracts. Other issues that were raised at the meeting include; the rising cases of robbery in Kibuye town and commercial sex work.

On this, residents were told to step up their efforts in community policing. The meeting was attended by area residents including business men, development partners operating in the area and local leaders.
